Nisab 2026: Gold or Silver — Which Threshold Should You Use?
The gold nisab is ~USD 7,000 in 2026. The silver nisab is ~USD 470. The choice you make can decide whether you owe Zakat at all. Here is the modern consensus.
The two classical benchmarks
Nisab is the minimum wealth threshold below which Zakat is not obligatory. The Prophet ﷺ set two benchmarks: 87.48 grams of pure gold, or 612.36 grams of pure silver. In 1400 AH these two values were roughly equivalent; today they diverge dramatically because silver has become far cheaper relative to gold.
Nisab values as of early 2026
Gold nisab: 87.48 g × ~USD 80/g = ~USD 7,000. Silver nisab: 612.36 g × ~USD 0.77/g = ~USD 470. That is a ~15× difference. Using the gold benchmark means only wealthier Muslims owe Zakat; using silver means many middle-income Muslims owe it too.
Why contemporary councils recommend silver
AMJA, ISNA Fiqh Council, the European Council for Fatwa and Research, and most modern national councils recommend using the LOWER (silver) nisab. Their reasoning: Zakat is a right of the poor over the wealthy; a threshold that captures more surplus wealth better serves the Quranic purpose (9:60). Choosing the higher gold threshold effectively excuses more people from a right the poor have.
The Hanafi-scholar counterpoint
Some traditional Hanafi scholars maintain the classical view that the OWNER chooses the benchmark that best fits their asset composition — gold for gold-heavy portfolios, silver for silver-heavy ones. In practice, however, since most modern wealth is in cash (which was originally silver-denominated in classical texts), the silver benchmark is jurisprudentially closer to the source.

Which do I choose if I have both cash and gold?
Add the value of all zakatable wealth (cash + gold + silver + investments) and compare to the silver nisab. This is the most common recommendation across contemporary councils.
Does inflation affect nisab?
Yes — nisab is anchored to real-metal weights, so its cash-equivalent floats with spot prices. In inflationary periods this actually LOWERS the barrier to Zakat obligation in real terms, which serves the poor.
