Zakat in the Netherlands: A 2026 Guide for Dutch Muslims
Nisab in EUR, madhhab context (Hanafi/Maliki), local recipient categories and worked examples. Free calculator included.
Is Zakat obligatory on Dutch Muslims?
Yes. Zakat is the third pillar of Islam and is obligatory on every eligible Muslim worldwide — including Dutch Muslims — provided they own wealth above the Nisab threshold for one full lunar year (hawl). Immigration status, national citizenship and secular tax residency do not change the Islamic obligation.
What is the Nisab in EUR today?
The Nisab is the value of 85 g of gold or 595 g of silver. Because those two commodities have drifted apart, most modern fatwa councils recommend using the lower silver benchmark so that more surplus wealth reaches the poor. Our calculator fetches live gold and silver prices in EUR and computes the current Nisab for you.
Which madhhab governs Zakat in the Netherlands?
Dutch Muslims historically follow the Hanafi/Maliki school. Differences between madhhabs on Zakat are narrow — the 2.5% rate on gold, silver, cash, trade goods, receivables and business inventory is agreed. Debate exists around retirement accounts, agricultural produce, livestock thresholds and jewellery for personal use.
What counts as Zakatable wealth?
Cash + savings + gold + silver + trade goods + receivables + investable equities + business inventory (at market value), minus immediate short-term debts. Your primary residence, personal car and household items are excluded. Retirement accounts follow the "accessible vs locked" distinction.
Where can I give Zakat locally in the Netherlands?
Verify each recipient against the local charity registry (e.g. IRS Pub 78 in the US, the Charity Commission in the UK, CRA in Canada, JAWHAR/LZS in Malaysia, PCP in Pakistan). Ask your local masjid for a vetted list. Amanah by Zakat.International does not maintain a directory — the local trust chain always beats a stale online list.
Use the calculator
Open the Zakat calculator and pick the Netherlands as your country. It applies the Hanafi/Maliki defaults, converts Nisab to EUR live and produces a downloadable Hijri-dated Zakat certificate for your records.
