Zakat on business inventory in Indonesia
Every self-employed or business-owning Muslim in Indonesia must pay Zakat on trade inventory. Inventory includes raw materials in the process of becoming saleable goods, finished goods held for sale, work-in-progress and any goods in transit under your ownership. The valuation is market value on the Zakat date — not cost price.
The four-line Zakat formula for a business
Zakatable base = (a) cash and bank balances + (b) inventory at market value + (c) trade receivables collectable in the next year, minus (d) trade payables and short-term debt due within the year. Multiply the base by 2.5%. Fixed assets used in operations (machinery, delivery vehicles, shop fixtures, computers) are not Zakatable — they are wealth-producing tools, not commodities held for sale.
Bad debts and doubtful receivables in Indonesia
Only receivables you *expect* to collect are Zakatable now. Doubtful debts (customer default risk, disputed invoices) are Zakatable in the year they are actually collected. Write-offs recognised in your Indonesia accounts also drop out of the Zakat base. Keep an aged-receivables report — it doubles as your Zakat evidence.
Partnerships, shareholders and joint ventures in Indonesia
Each partner or shareholder in a business trading in Indonesia pays Zakat on their pro-rata share of the net Zakatable assets. This is why quarterly or annual balance sheets matter: you cannot compute the Zakat properly without a snapshot of cash + inventory + receivables − short-term liabilities on your personal Hijri Zakat date. Our business calculator lets you upload or type these four line items and returns the number.
