Are stocks Zakatable for Omani Muslims?

Yes, but only Sharia-screened equities may be *held* to begin with. Once you hold permissible stocks — either individual shares, Sharia-compliant ETFs or halal mutual funds — Zakat is due on them. The rate is 2.5% each lunar year, applied to the market value on your Zakat date. In Oman this covers both individual brokerage accounts and taxable investment accounts.

Passive investor vs active trader — different rules

Active traders (holding for capital gain, frequent turnover) treat the entire market value of the portfolio as Zakatable, like trade goods. Passive long-term investors (holding for dividends) may use the AAOIFI method: Zakat on the *net Zakatable assets* of each company (cash + receivables + inventory − short-term liabilities), pro-rated to your share ownership. Our calculator ships both methods; pick the one closest to your intention and stay consistent year on year.

Sharia-screening in Oman

Whether or not local regulators mandate Sharia labels, the responsibility is yours. Screens to apply: (1) no interest-bearing business as core revenue, (2) no alcohol/gambling/pork/adult/conventional insurance revenue > 5%, (3) debt-to-market-cap ratio below 33%, (4) interest income below 5% of revenue. Providers like Zoya, Islamicly, IdealRatings and AAOIFI-certified screeners cover most tickers on Oman exchanges.

Retirement / pension accounts (401k, RRSP, superannuation, EPF, etc.)

The rule turns on accessibility. If you can withdraw the money today (even with a tax penalty), Zakat is due on the market value each year. If the money is genuinely locked until retirement, most modern councils allow you to defer Zakat until the year of withdrawal, treating the whole withdrawn amount as Zakatable in that year. Employer contributions you have not vested in are not yet part of your wealth and are excluded.
