Zakat on Cryptocurrency

Cryptocurrency is treated as a trade good (`urood al-tijara`) by the majority of contemporary scholars. Market value on your Zakat anniversary is the basis; if held for long-term speculation the same 2.5% rate applies.

How to compute Zakat on cryptocurrency

  1. 1
Snapshot value on your Hijri anniversary
Use the market rate on the same lunar date each year.
  2. 2
    Sum across all wallets
Include cold storage, exchange balances, LP positions.
  3. 3
    Apply 2.5%
Multiply the total by 0.025. This is your Zakat on crypto for the year.
